And The Award Goes To..

This may be the first and last time you see me write about award ceremony style; usually I'm more interested in what Oscar de la Renta is up to rather than the Oscars. There is much hype surrounding the dresses, which actress is wearing which designer, did they get it right or wrong. Controversially, it all looks wrong to me - actresses are forced into toeing the line between safe and sharp, which comes across as forced and old-fashioned.

Despite my opinions I had to take a quick peek at the line-up (I wouldn't wish to be without conversation with my fellow womankind for the next week) and was pleasantly surprised to find a look which I think works perfectly for a young, hot actress.

Judy Greer in Monique Lhuillier is sporty, luxurious, and on-trend, with simple yet effective details (I love the full-length exposed zip and racer-style shoulders). It's a dress that translates well to reality, too: shorten the hemline or swap the sequins for metallic fabric for the perfect party dress.

I would have loved to see her fash this look up a little with a slicked-back ponytail and dark, smudgy eye but maybe this would be a touch risky for the Academy Awards. I am in no way biased as I hadn't heard of Greer before and haven't knowingly seen her act in anything; I just wanted to give to kudos for trying out an edgy dress on traditionally stuffy red carpet.

The LFWeek in Outfits

Day 1: customised charity shop shirt, Versace x H&M scarf, ASOS skirt, Kurt Geiger shoes (image from Fashion156.com)
Day 2: H&M jumper and trousers, George shirt, ASOS shoes, Vivienne Westwood bag, Meadham Kirchhoff x Nail Rock wraps, Wired Jewellery chalkboard ring (such a good idea - mine stated "love LFW")
Day 3: H&M jacket, Meadham Kirchhoff NEWGEN t-shirt, Oasis jeans, Miista boots
Day 4: H&M kimono and studded bustier, Topshop shorts, Acne shoes, Zara bag

It's been exciting keeping up with Milan Fashion Week - the biggest trend there seems to be baroque, which we saw a lot of in London, too. I was really disappointed with my long-standing favourite Prada; did I miss something? Were the inferences too subtle? Miuccia's signature of injecting humour into her collections seemed to be missing. Very cute shoes, though.

Designers appear to be playing musical chairs - Raf Simons out at Jil Sander, Jil herself to return; Stefano Pilati out at YSL, Hedi Slimane in (who I'm sure said he didn't wish to design again, but I can't find the exact quote). I wait with baited breath to hear the next movement in this complex game!

Get LFW Street Style at BlackWhiteDenim

If you subscribe to the BlackWhiteDenim newsletter (if not.. why not? You can even sign him up for a not-so-subtle nod in the right direction) you will have already seen the very best street style snaps I took at London Fashion Week - consisting solely of black, white, and denim!

Create these looks by shopping the BlackWhiteDenim web store, or, if you are local, pop into the Wilmslow boutique to be styled from head-to-toe by Jo and co. A good place to start would be What's New for your Fashion Week Fash Ed essentials - the slog is not yet over with another two weeks of Milan and Paris to go.
Such a simple, yet brilliant concept; build your wardrobe on black, white and denim and you will never have a "I have nothing to wear" day again.

PS: I am fiercely Northern (especially so after spending the week in London; I think my already broad accent thickened while I was down there) and am always a supporter of Northern talent, so do me a favour by voting for Leeds lass Sheree Milli in the Grazia Blog of the Year awards. Her blog is a true breath of fresh air in a sea of what I wore todays, and Sheree's Holly Fulton AW12 report (for which she was seated on the FROW) was full of colour and energy.

The circus themed House of Evolution party, featuring burlesque dancers, beds, candy floss, and slightly freaky bathrooms; flashes of neon were a big street style trend, as were patterned trousers and leggings, statement shoes (but when are they not on trend?), hats and (gulp) fascinators; Pandemonia goes for a daytime stroll; Mollie from the Saturdays arrives for Mark Fast, and Nicola Roberts leaves; Charlotte Gush in tie-dye from our very own Affleck's Palace; I know this man is a someone but I cannot place who - help, anyone?

If you had told me this time last year that I would be attending my idolised London Fashion Week just twelve months later, I would have glanced away from my obsessive checking of style.com just long enough to give you a withering glance.

Yet, I was there at Somerset House for the A/W 2012 season. I was lucky enough to see a fair few shows, go to the best party I have ever been to (massive thanks to Katch PR and House of Evolution - you guys sure know how to throw a crazy after party) and meet some really wonderful people - some planned, but many I was simply stood next to in a queue and bonded from there (hello to Sophie of la Fashion Folie, Anna of the Quarter Life Tales of Annie Bean, Jenna of Pret A Style, Amy of Wolf Whistle, and Victoria of the Window Shopper).

I hope my photos have given you a feel of what it's been like to be at LFW, though they won't have conveyed just how constantly overjoyed I was to be there (even late last night when the pain of four days of heel-wearing nearly reduced me to tears).

First ambition of going to London Fashion Week fulfilled. Next ambition: to attend as press working for one of my favourite magazines.

Here's hoping.

Ashley Isham in the beautiful Goldsmiths hall, Pandemonium front row, DIY knitted necklace, and the best collection I've seen all LFW at Vauxhall Fashion Scout, Zeynep Tosun. Check her stuff out; I want to wear everything.

Today is my last day here in London, and I have had the absolute time of my life. Check out the BlackWhiteDenim blog for my show reports. No shows today but off to Somerset House shortly for street style snapping, coffees.. and MORE Vitamin Water. Eek!
