ALL PRESENT & CORRECT

 photo gIMG_0867_zpsb98c5090.jpg

That outfit you wear just after Christmas that consists entirely of presents, even if they don't really go together.. don't tell me you don't do it.

Christmas was OK actually. Santa was very good to me (ie my mum went a little crazy) and I spent a lot of quality time in my onesie.

I'm wearing:
Topshop socks
Vans hi-tops
Minkpink clutch

DRESSING DOWN

 photo IMG_7641_zps025c2ef7.jpg

Ever wondered what I wear to dress down, to run errands and the like? No? Well, just humour me then... I don't always wear 5-inch flatforms and rainbows of colours, as much as I would like to. I do sometimes just dress down, and this outfit is just something I'd wear to uni or to pop to the supermarket; this particular look was for a day off work, picking up our weekly shop and visiting the hospital.

I'd seen Minkpink bags on Market HQ (such an amazing store.. shame it's in Auz) but didn't know they were sold in the UK - so you can imagine my excitement when I found out they were being stocked at Eternal Envy, just down the road from me. Cue the biggest, baddest of the collection quickly coming into my possession. The patchwork reminds me of bags my nana had in the 1980s, with added fringing, which I'd have on every accessory if I had my way. Along with my pastel tie-dyed Evil Twin tee, light furry jacket, and skinny pleather trousers this is my kind of dressing down.

I look so tired and pale in these photos.. a rest is needed but the end of the university year is in sight, plus Chris and I have started talking about holidays. A horizontal week in the sun has never been more necessary!

I'm wearing:
Minkpink jacket
Oasis trousers
Waiste beanie
Dr Martens shoes

MEET THE ETTE GIRLS

Photobucket

this grungy little shop in Affleck's Arcade. Beginning life as a vintage store, the Thrifty ladies now stock handmade tie-dye tees (AND SOCKS..!), velvet circle skirts and holographic crop tops. I also  the ladies that run the shop too, you can check out Lucie's blog here; a healthy dose of white hair, Evil Twin and Jeffrey Campbell Coltranes are totally on point for the Thriftette brand.

On a busy Saturday Chris and I popped in to pick up a Yin Yang tee and play a game of Mario Kart on the Ettes' Nintendo 64. I was Princess Peach, he was Yoshi. He won, this time at least. We'll be back in soon for a rematch.. and also to pick up a special request of men's tie dye socks!

NUMBER THIRTY-SIX

Photobucket

After three weeks of living here I feel that my new flat is now in a state where I can show it off. We've had a couple of issues - like, who leaves towels and a broken microwave behind? - and despite some parts not being finished (ahem, the kitchen) we are pretty much there. Although these pictures are not quite Coveteur-ed, the flat is at its very tidiest; I can assure you, you wouldn't want to see it in its messy state!

I'm so happy to finally have a dressing room-cum-office space. Ask Chris and he'll say it's the guest bedroom, but we have guests over maybe once a month and I get dressed every day (sometimes twice, or more) so to me it's a no-brainer.

Photobucket Photobucket
During those dark, dark weeks without the internet we had to find something to occupy ourselves, so one evening a duvet set got the tie dye treatment. The rest of the soft furnishings are quivering with nerves as we speak. I know not to blame late-night cheese for trippy dreams from now on..

Photobucket PhotobucketPhotobucket
The main thing that drew us to this flat was the amount of light. There's a huge window in the living area and the daylight fills the entire room - coming from a flat where you have to put the kitchen light on in the day, it's a real novelty. Chris has claimed the chair, but I love sitting on the couch in the morning with coffee and granola.

What do you think? I'm still looking for some extra bits - a window box for herbs, sari offcuts for curtain trim, a big wooden Buddha, and a huge print of George Harrison circa Hari Krishna - so if you have any decorating ideas or secret interiors boutiques I'd love to hear about them.

FEEDING MY FIXATION

Photobucket
Somehow my parents pre-empted my recent tie dye obsession and brought me back this dress from their trip to Malta, along with a sweet little straw and walnut bag. Just a heads' up from the 'rents: don't visit Malta from June-August, unless you enjoy being cooked alive. To me, that is preferable to this naff weather, but each to their own! I threw caution to the wind today and wore the dress, despite knowing that it could tip down any second.
Photobucket Photobucket
Sophy Robson declared in this month's Vogue that "negative space" nails were the next big thing, so I obviously had to get straight on that..

I'm wearing:
Dress & bag gifts from Malta
Jon Richard necklace via The Style Rawr
Acne shoes
Vintage belt
Shop Dixi, Topshop & BCBG Max Azria rings
Kenneth Jay Lane & ibizan market bracelets
Volkswagen watch

I've had a bit of a stressful time of it lately, involving presenting an idea to the Managing Director of Oasis (thankfully she liked it and I got some fantastic feedback, to the point of me being so overwhelmed I cried with joy) so I am really looking forward to some exciting goings on this weekend. Saturday involves a flying visit to London to take a tour of Oxford Street's Forever 21; I'll be getting a feel for the brand and doing a spot of shopping before their big launch in the Trafford Centre later this month.

On Sunday I have been invited to the Manchester SkyRide. I'll be there snapping photos of stylish cyclists, but I will also be cycling the route myself! Those of you who follow me on Twitter will know that recently I have been on a health and exercise kick, so this has really come at the perfect time. You can sign up here, and don't worry if you haven't got a bike - you can hire a bike just for the ride - that's what I'll be doing. My only problem is that I'm struggling to figure out what to wear myself. I'm thinking a tweed jacket and tailored shorts, but as this is a completely new sartorial area for me, anything might happen, although I feel modesty is the key element when considering cycling gear! I wonder what Kelly Brook will be wearing. Think she'll need something a little bit more substantial than this, considering the location of the ride..

I do hope to see some of you there in your very best cycling outfits!

MR BOND, I EXPECT YOU TIE DYE

Whilst Goldfinger may have had to wait a long time for Mr Bond to tie dye anything (that man never has any downtime; plus I'm not sure it sits so well with the suave look) I have been rather keen on dying, bleaching, ripping, cutting, and studding my clothes as of late. It's mainly because I've been craving a fresh look without the budget to match, but also it's a whole lot of good clean fun.

So a request from Lois at Carrot Top couldn't have come at a better time: Dirty Fresh Laundry wanted to send me a brand new t-shirt, then I was to customise it in any which way I could. YES. Basically a licence to go crazy.

When it arrived it looked like this:

Photobucket
The t-shirt is of an excellent quality, totally opaque, and the print is the sort that will age pleasingly. Just a heads up on sizing: I'm a 10-12 on top and this is a men's small. I ordered in that size as I thought I'd have a little extra fabric to play with but it's quite fitted, so just a warning for when you order.

First things first - protect your bath, or wherever you choose to tie dye. I don't want any mums or landlords after my guts! The binbag in my bath was fairly futile but it did help a little, and whenever I got dye on the porcelain, floor, or anywhere, I cleaned it up straight away - you just don't know how it will stain, and you're better safe than sorry, no?

Photobucket
After that I prepared my t-shirt. I followed Shannon's advice - holding the tee in the middle, spin it around so it's like a coil. Tie bands or string around to keep in place. The tighter you tie, the more white space will be left.

Photobucket
You can be as creative as you like with this - when researching tie dyes I found this page and loved all the different dye shapes, so since my boyfriend has been nagging for a tie dye tee for a while, I decided to experiment a little with the shape of his.
Photobucket
Now it's time to make the dye. Glove up! Again, the dye might stain your skin, or worse - you might be allergic to it. Be careful.
Photobucket
I could only find Dylon machine wash dyes (is it me or are dyes harder to find now? In my teens I'm sure I could pick them up from the supermarket or my local chemist. Anyway, I digress) in Flamingo Pink and Ocean Blue, so I made them up in bottles with sports lids (another great tip from Shannon). I only had one sports lid bottle so carved a hole in a normal lid. Again, be careful! I used one part salt, one part dye, and four parts warm water.
Photobucket
Then I attacked my tees with the dyes. I began gingerly but ended up throwing the two full bottles over two t-shirts. I unravelled them to check how I was doing - the long, thin patterned one looked amazing how it was, but the spiral one needed a bit more colour. I opened it out and added more colour to suit.
Photobucket Photobucket
Leave your tee for at least an hour. I left mine all afternoon, conscious of the fact I'd used machine washing dye! I don't have any space in my flat to hang them - especially due to our cream carpet - so placed them in buckets. Use this time to clean the bathroom, think of outfits to wear with your tee, have a brew, daydream about Michael Fassbender.. you get the picture. Then rinse, using a little bit of fabric washing powder or liquid.

Photobucket
After waiting all afternoon I couldn't wait any longer so bunged them in the tumble dryer after they'd drained for ten minutes. My brief from Dirty Fresh Laundry was to customise this tee in any which way possible, so a few knots and studs later, my tee was finally finished.

This tee will almost certainly be most at home on my next trip to Ibiza.. but until then will make the perfect layering piece. I really think the key here is to have a go - I haven't tie dyed since Brownies and even then I probably wasn't responsible enough to do any of the process. Admittedly I like the pattern on my boyfriend's tee better - I will have to get him to model it - but the beauty of tie dye is that you're not completely sure how the pattern will work out. Let me know if you do try, and send me pictures of your dye pattern!
